Ali* approached us after a year of abuse from his neighbour: racist slurs painted on his fence; faeces being thrown onto his lawn; having his car windows smashed.
He had taken up this incidence with the council, the housing association, and the police over the months, to little success.
We helped Ali work through the paperwork, came up with a strategy, advised him timelines the police keep to for investigations and complaints, and helped to draft letters to the police. We continue to provide ongoing support to this case.
Following up on discrimination and hate crime is a slow and difficult task involving lots of paperwork. No one wants to admit that they have committed a hate crime or actively discriminated. The IRU caseworkers aim to make this process straightforward and easy for victims of Islamophobia.
